Beecon GmbH is a founding partner of the AmbiComp (TM) project. From 2006-2009 this project received seed funding from the German ministry of education and research.
The AmbiComp (TM) Project
Simplify software development for embedded systems
AmbiComp (TM) - the Ambient Computing Components project - aims at simplifying software development for small embedded computers. Software developers can easily program these devices so that they transparently communicate and collaborate. A set of so connected AmbiComp (TM) devices behaves as if it was a single system. Thereby, AmbiComp (TM) enables system integrators to easily create flexible smart environments.
AmbiComp (TM) applications run on a bunch of interoperable Ambient Intelligence Control Units, so-called AICUs. Each AICU consists of one or more tiny sandwich modules. Each of them is specialized for a specific task, for example, Bluetooth communication, IO control, etc. All sandwich modules come with a virtual machine that very similar to a Java virtual machine. The AmbiComp (TM) partners developed this virtual machine so that it creates a transparently distributed execution environment. It supports many standard APIs, and it allows a comfortable object-oriented programming style.
A major advantage of using Java is the increased productivity of software developers: Most software engineers are familiar with Java. Many excellent tools further support high-quality software development. The AmbiComp (TM) project has created a comfortable Eclipse-based environment for programming the AICUs. It has also created a methodological framework and a powerful component model that further simplify the software-development for adaptive smart environments.
The AmbiComp (TM) Consortium
An open platform for interested companies
AmbiComp (TM) is a joined effort of Beecon GmbH, the University of Karlsruhe, the Stuttgart Media University, the Fraunhofer institute for experimental software engineering, and Alcatel-Lucent. The idea was created by Thomas Fuhrmann, co-founder of Beecon GmbH and Emmy-Noether assistent professor - first at the University of Karlsruhe, now at the Technical University of Munich.
The Ambicomp (TM) consortium is open for associated partners. In particular, small and medium enterprises can so contribute their views and needs to the project, and thereby shape the further development of the AmbiComp (TM) technology. Associated partners have full access to early technology releases. They receive thorough support for all their AmbiComp-based projects.
